Is a niche like “weight loss” too competitive and should it be avoided?
I’ve always learned that the markets that have tons of interest – like weight loss – are the ones to be in, because it means there are buyers. Don’t want to waste time with markets that have minimal searches.
It all comes down to what keywords people are searching on. I use Word Tracker to do my keyword analysis. The key is to find keywords that are popular – lots of searches on that phrase, yet are not too competitive – not too many webpages with that keyword (under 10K is what I go by, but others may wish to comment).
I take the competitiveness one step further… I do an allintitle:”keyword” in Google to see how many webpages actually have the keyword in the title.
The majority of websites are not at all optimized. So if you do some very basic optimizing, even, such as putting the keyword in the webpage title, you’re doing so much better than the majority out there.
Instead of focusing on a root keyword that is way competitive, such as “weight loss”, the tools can help you find better keywords (populare, yet not too competitive), sich as “weight loss secrets”, or “weight loss program”, or even more narrow like the retired football player idea. Don’t guess though, let the tools tell you what people are ACTUALLY searching on.
Another tool I know of is nicheinspector.com, but haven’t used it.
